Recently, I commissioned a new VPS, running CentOS 6, and I noticed that when connected to it with PuTTY, using the keys on the numeric pad did nothing. I checked another SSH connection, and sure enough, the keys worked fine.
To get your number pad keys working, you need to use the Disable application keypad mode option. You can see this in the options in the treeview when you start PuTTY up, under Terminal » Features. Or - if you're already mid-session, you can click on the top-left icon in the title bar and choose Change Settings.
